“The Eras Tour” by Taylor Swift hits theaters

Under thehelmof Emmy award-winning director Sam Wrench, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tourfollows the 34-year-old pop icon and her dancers onstage, as Swift performs 40 songs from 10 albums during her 2023-24 The Eras Tour. The film has grossed over $261 million at box offices worldwide, including more than 78 million yuan on the Chinese mainland, according to statistics from trackers Box Office Mojoand Beacon. The 169-minute-long movie has also become the highest-grossing imported documentary of all time on the Chinese mainland. Among concert films, “The Eras Tour” wins the championship, unseating previous record holder—Michael Jackson’s “This Is It”. (China Daily, 2024-1-17)

Chinese stars light up Australian Open

China’s Zhang Zhizhen made another piece of Chinese tennis history on Tuesday when he and Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic produced a masterclass to reach the men’s doubles semifinals at the Australian Open. The unseeded pairing of Zhang and Machac overwhelmed Ariel Behar and Adam Pavlasek 6-3, 6-1 in a one-sided quarterfinal that lasted just one hour. Zhang is the first male player of the Chinese Tennis Association to reach the final four in Grand Slam, which is the best Chinese mainland men’s performance in such a competitive match. On the women’s side, Qinwen Zheng became the first Chinese player to reach a major singles semifinal since Li Na’s 2014 Australian Open win by beating unseeded Russian Anna Kalinskaya on January 24.
